1968 @ Bio Rex: Youth Culture Now!

The year 1968 was not only the beginning of the Helsinki Festival, it was also a year of rebellion. How do the counter-movements and yearning for freedom of that memorable year show in the present day? That is the question for the evening sessions organised at the Bio Rex cinema and hosted by the Amox Rex museum, where you return to the past through the means of film while also envisioning the future.

The event is organised by the Helsinki Festival in co-operation with Amos Rex, Globe Art Point, the National Audiovisual Institute KAVI, Korjaamo and Poetry Moon.

Monterey Pop Festival marked a revolution where radical unconventionality shaped music, fashion, sex and generations into new forms. Where does the youth of today position themselves, identity-wise?

6:30 p.m.
Youth Culture Now!
The shaping of the identity of the youth in the 1960s and in the present is investigated from three different perspectives. Journalist-musician Pekka Laine talks about the DJ culture, sociologist Tommi Hoikkala about generation movements and journalist Ina Mikkola about social media. At the same time, they all talk about counterculture and the lifestyle rebellion of youth.

8:30 p.m.
Monterey Pop
The film by famed documentarist D. A. Pennebaker about the Monterey Pop Festival, organised before the Summer of Love, captures the spirit of the age from the blossoming of the hippie culture to the rebellion that culminated on stage when Jimi Hendrix set his guitar on fire.

Tickets to the screening incl. handling fees €11 / €17.50

The evening’s programme is realised in co-operation with the National Audiovisual Institute KAVI.
