Steve Vai

Lauri Porra Flyover Ensemble

Steve Vai is considered one of the best electric guitarists in the world – regardless of genre. Vai is known for his mind-blowing, fast and melodic solos and stylistically perfect guitar sound. He is also a showman through and through, whose gigs turn into fiery Events progressing with insane energy. Vai’s music melts progressive rock and metal into a red-hot euphoric mix.

During his long career, Vai has played with giants of rock ranging from Ozzy Osbourne and Motörhead to Meat Loaf, won several Grammy Awards and sold over 15 million albums. Vai rose to fame in the late-1970s as a member of Frank Zappa’s band, which is likely the origin of his massive, genre-breaking ambition and inclination to think outside the box.

Lately Vai has been composing for various big bands and using classical orchestras. At Huvila Festival Tent, Vai is accompanied by a reinforced Tapiola Sinfonietta – the audience is in for a tent erupting with sound. Tapiola Sinfonietta is led by Jukka Iisakkila.

The evening’s opening act is a pioneer of modern progressive rock, Lauri Porra Flyover Ensemble. Headed by bassist-composer Porra, the band has cemented its place as one of the best live acts in Finland, receiving praise from both jazz and heavy metal enthusiasts.

On Sunday, day before the gig,  fans have a chance to get to know the guitarist’s secret at Steve Vai Master Class.

Doors open at 5.30 pm, Lauri Porra Flyover Ensemble starts at 7 pm and Steve Vai at 8.20 pm.

The Huvila Festival Tent is the Helsinki Festival’s dedicated hub and a unique cross between a concert hall and a traditional festival marquee. Designed by architect Roy Mänttäri, the tent has been erected every year since 1995 at a variety of locations across the capital. The Huvila programme, encompassing everything from intimate concerts to riotous club nights, is a valuable addition to the city’s music scene. Huvila is particularly known for its strong world music offering and for providing an early platform to lesser-known artists. Past Huvila acts include Radiohead, Cesaria Evora, Marc Ribot, Laurie Anderson & Lou Reed, Wilco, Hugh Masekela and Yoko Ono & Thurston Moore.

As the name suggests, Huvila is a tent and the weather can sometimes lend its own special charm to the proceedings. Sounds from outside the tent can sometimes be heard during performances. Don’t forget to bring a warm layer, as the nights in August can be chilly. The Huvila season coincides with the end of the summer season and to make the most of it, there is usually dancing on most nights!

The tent comprises an atmospheric restaurant, the perfect place for enjoying the August nights post-concert. Catering is provided by Helsinki’s highly-acclaimed Juuri restaurant.

Events at the Huvila Festival Tent are for adults aged 18 and over. Younger guests can be admitted provided they are accompanied by a guardian. The age restriction does not apply to the daytime concert.

The performances start at 19.00 and finish no later than 22.00.
